Most likely, everything that could be said about Warren McCulloch has been said already and, most likely, everything that McCulloch ever said, had never been said before. What to say now about Warren McCulloch and what he did say. I am most grateful to Seymour Papert. who concluded his introduction to the first published collection of some of McCulloch ́s essays, Embodiments of Mind (1), by reminding us of one of his favorite teaching aids to help his baffled disciples to overcome their bebafflement: "Don ́t bite my finger, look where I am pointing."

In: This is an abbreviated version of a lecture given at the opening of the fourth International Conference on Environmental Design Research on April 15, 1973, at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia. -

I am sure you remember the plain citizen Jourdain in Moliere’s Bourgeois Gentilhomme who, nouveau riche, travels in the sophisticated circles of the French aristocracy, and who is eager to learn. On one occasion with his new friends they speak about poetry and prose, and Jourdain discovers to his amazement and great delight that whenever he speaks, he speaks prose. He is overwhelmed by this discovery: “I am speaking Prose! I have always spoken Prose! I have spoken Prose throughout my whole life!”

Ladies and gentlemen—As you may remember, I opened my remarks at earlier conferences of our Society with theorems which, owing to the generosity of Stafford Beer, have been called “Heinz von Foerster’s Theorem Number One and Number Two”. This all is now history. However, building on a tradition of two instances, you may rightly expect me to open my remarks today again with a theorem. Indeed I shall do so but it will not bear my name. It can be traced back to Humberto Maturana, the Chilean neurophysiologist, who a few years ago, fascinated us with his presentation on “autopoiesis”, the organization of living things.

Recent research on young children’s cognitive development supports the viability of a neoconstructivist model of learning. These new approaches support a bottom-up account of knowledge acquisition that incorporates many constructivist principles and does not support top- down nativist models.

The Implementation of a Constructivist Approach to the Resolution of Prejudice / Gash, Hugh -- Kenny, Vincent

Using a consistently constructivist approach, the formation of prejudices, their role in identity, and their resultant resilience are examined. Next, the strategies which may be used to persuade people to change such constructs are considered. For the person who owns the prejudice these amount to experiences which invite reconsideration of existing ways of construing: for one who desires to invite another to change, these strategies include distancing, circular questioning, circulation, parenthesising and orthogonality of facilitator position.
