Ladies and gentlemen—As you may remember, I opened my remarks at earlier conferences of our Society with theorems which, owing to the generosity of Stafford Beer, have been called “Heinz von Foerster’s Theorem Number One and Number Two”. This all is now history. However, building on a tradition of two instances, you may rightly expect me to open my remarks today again with a theorem. Indeed I shall do so but it will not bear my name. It can be traced back to Humberto Maturana, the Chilean neurophysiologist, who a few years ago, fascinated us with his presentation on “autopoiesis”, the organization of living things.

Po staletí jsme měli paradigma myšlení, že mysl je v hlavě. To, že mysl existuje někde v mozku a že zpracovává a ukládá informace. Při bližším zkoumání mozku zjistíte, že entita, kterou nazýváme "mysl", není ve skutečnosti tam, ale používá se jako metafora pro proces myšlení. Metafora je popisem něčeho, co chceme vysvětlit, co existuje v našich zkušenostech; proto metafora nevysvětluje mysl.

Search of the Mind: Humberto Maturana / Cull, Jane

Over the centuries we have had a paradigm of thinking that the mind is in the head. That the mind exists somewhere in the brain and that it processes and stores information. On a closer inspection of the brain you would find that the entity we call "mind" is not actually there, but is used as a metaphor for the process of thinking. A metaphor is a description of something that we want to explain that exists in our experience; thus a metaphor is not an explanation.

The Bioethical Dimension od Maturana's Thought / Mascolo, Rossella

Introduced in 1970, bioethics is now more and more commonly used since it applies to a variety of concepts belonging to traditional Western thought. Just like other dualisms that are typical of traditional Western thought (e.g., mind/body, subject/object, philosophy/science), bioethics is developing in areas that are mostly isolated from each other, with each argument restricted to its specific space, without affecting the general concept of bioethics. It is also characterized by the dualism ought/being.

We subscribe to the view, expressed by Maturana and others, that satisfying experience of understanding does not result from invoking objectivity, the truth, or compelling argument, to achieve agreement by the force of reason, nor from a process of informative exchange, but from some other qualities, to be elusive and therefore we try to combine scientific explanation with a poetic mataphor which likens understanding to dance

Based upon their experience working in a community mental-health clinic using solution-focused brief therapy, the authors describe a template for developing compliments. With most people, the family is a central part of their social system and therefore key to solution building. What are the consequences of this work? Fundamentally, it shows that the eye speaks to the brain in a language already highly organized and interpreted, instead of transmitting some more or less accurate copy of the distribution of light on the receptors. As a crude analogy, suppose we have a man watching the clouds and reporting them to a weather station.
