The main conclusion is that Maturana has expanded the understanding of humanness and therapy through the biology of the observer.

My thesis is that if a therapist, practitioner or facilitator of research engages with individuals or groups on a basis of relational equality the outcomes can be unanticipated new knowledge which leads to new actions. This 'new' knowledge can be thought of as 'knowing of the third kind' and its expression is a greater sense of connectedness to diverse entities.

This all is now history. However, building on a tradition of two instances, you may rightly expect me to open my remarks today again with a theorem. Indeed I shall do so but it will not bear my name. It can be traced back to Humberto Maturana, the Chilean neurophysiologist, who a few years ago, fascinated us with his presentation on “autopoiesis”, the organization of living things.

000001598 520__ $$aHuman beings differ in ways of understanding, interpreting, describing or sharing experience. On the basis of experience we construct our own conceptual systems (beliefs and values) that are neither consistent nor monolithic. "Alternative conceptual systems exist, whether one likes it or not. They are not likely to go away, since they arise from a fundamental human capacity to conceptualise experience...A refusal to recognise conceptual relativism where it exists does have ethical consequences. It leads directly to conceptual elitism and imperialism - to the assumption that our behaviour is rational and that of other people is not, and to attempts to impose our way of thinking on others" (Lakoff, 1987; p.337).
