Gregory Bateson, Systems Theory, and Autopoiesis / Hallbom, Kristine

Bateson and Maturana, both contemporary philosophers and systemic thinkers, spent a good part of their academic careers searching for the "Patterns of Life";. Both men have strong backgrounds in cybernetics and were colleagues of the great cybernetician Heinz Von Foerester, who originated the legendary Macy conferences in the 1950's in which cybernetics developer Norbert Wiener played a great part in.

The contribution of Humberto Maturana
to the sciences of complexity and psychology / Ruiz, Alfredo B.

In: Journal of Constructivist Psychology. - č. 9, s. 283-302. - 1996

This work attempts to present the most important contributions of Humberto R. Maturana to the field of psychology, in an effort to reveal them directly. The main conclusion is that Maturana has expanded the understanding of humanness and therapy through the biology of the observer.

Autopoiesis / Whitaker, Randall

- 1996

Lesson 3 consists of two texts: an introduction to autopoietic theory by Randal Whitaker and a major text by Humberto Maturana. There are links to the important Website of Randal Whitaker on Autopoiesis, where a bibliography and suggestions for further reading may be found. At the end of this page there is a link to the discussion page.

Autopoiesis & Enaction / Whitaker, Randall

This introductory tutorial is designed to give you a brief overview of autopoietic theory -- the term I use to denote the work of Chilean biologists Humberto R. Maturana and Francisco J. Varela. The following sections each provide a summary overview of a key concept.

Constructivism and Collaborative Enterprises / Steward. Alan

In: Seized by Agreement, Swamped by Understanding. Lloyd Fell, David Russell & Alan Stewart (Eds.) A collection of papers to celebrate the visit to Australia in August 1994 by Humberto Maturana. - - 1994

This paper is a contribution to a dialogue on contructivist ideas in qualitative research in which collaborative inquiry is a central feature. By this I mean a process of finding out how both 'researchers' and 'subjects' have come to conceive an issue through sharing of their perceptions. Collaborative or participatory action research is an example of this approach. I propose that a constructivist methodology or epistemology for collaborative inquiry can be developed from primary theoretical concepts such as Structural Determinism of Maturana, second order cybernetics of von Foerster and van Glasersfeld and of Personal Construct Theory of Kelly. I further propose that secondary interpretations of these seminal ideas by family therapists helps to show how to use this epistemology in collaborative inquiry.

Cybernetic Conversation / Steward, Alan

In: Seized by Agreement, Swamped by Understanding. Lloyd Fell, David Russell & Alan Stewart (Eds.) A collection of papers to celebrate the visit to Australia in August 1994 by Humberto Maturana. - - 1994

This paper is about a particular kind of relating between people engaged in processes of change, such as in therapy, primary medical care practice or participatory action research. My thesis is that if a therapist, practitioner or facilitator of research engages with individuals or groups on a basis of relational equality the outcomes can be unanticipated new knowledge which leads to new actions. This 'new' knowledge can be thought of as 'knowing of the third kind' and its expression is a greater sense of connectedness to diverse entities.

Social Ecology Education and Research / Russell, David

In: Seized by Agreement, Swamped by Understanding. Lloyd Fell, David Russell & Alan Stewart (Eds.) A collection of papers to celebrate the visit to Australia in August 1994 by Humberto Maturana. - - 1994

The roots of social ecology are embedded in the fertile soil that was the Hawkesbury Diploma in Rural Extension, first offered in 1970, at what was then known as Hawkesbury Agricultural College and now the University of Western Sydney. The program changed its title to Graduate Diploma in Extension in 1974, and again in 1982, to Graduate Diploma in Social Communication. During this period the key features of the program remained the same: it was always highly experiential; it overtly fostered the learner's growth in self esteem; and it espoused the goal of measuring learning against a yardstick of social relevance.

Ancient Wisdom and Contemporary Ecological Problems / Fell, Lloyd -- Dimitrov, Vladimir -- Russell, David

In: Seized by Agreement, Swamped by Understanding. Lloyd Fell, David Russell & Alan Stewart (Eds.) A collection of papers to celebrate the visit to Australia in August 1994 by Humberto Maturana. - - 1994

The Australian Aborigines' environmental culture and the "double bind" approach used in the program of Alcoholics Anonymous are considered as a source for the generation of a new strategy for dealing with the ecological problems of our day. The strategy aims at achieving a negotiated outcome in issues of high societal risk related to waste management in the Hawkesbury region of Sydney, Australia.thinking on others" (Lakoff, 1987; p.337).

Maturana’s Biology and Some Possible Implications for Education / Murray, Joy

In: Seized by Agreement, Swamped by Understanding. Lloyd Fell, David Russell & Alan Stewart (Eds.) A collection of papers to celebrate the visit to Australia in August 1994 by Humberto Maturana. - - 1994

Maturana is a biologist. He makes it very clear that he speaks and writes only as a biologist. Others may apply his work to other spheres; however he himself does not. This paper is based on notes taken during a three day lecture given by Humberto Maturana in St Kilda, Victoria, August 7th - 9th, 1993. It was obvious from the participants that many non-biologists have found Maturana's work to be influential in their thinking. The audience included immunologists, family therapists, academics, architects, agriculturalists and information technologists. Apart from the lecture notes I have included commentary on Maturana's work from other sources. I have also added what I think are similar ideas coming from other fields of study. What follows is an attempt to present some of Maturana's ideas and to suggest some of the implications of his biological theories for education.
