Metaphysics of an experimental epistemologist / Foerster, Heinz von

In: Vordenker. - - 1995

Most likely, everything that could be said about Warren McCulloch has been said already and, most likely, everything that McCulloch ever said, had never been said before. What to say now about Warren McCulloch and what he did say. I am most grateful to Seymour Papert. who concluded his introduction to the first published collection of some of McCulloch ́s essays, Embodiments of Mind (1), by reminding us of one of his favorite teaching aids to help his baffled disciples to overcome their bebafflement: "Don ́t bite my finger, look where I am pointing."

Systemické pojmosloví / Úlehla, Ivan

- 2015

Ludwig von Bertalanffy: A Pioneer of General Systems Theory / Weckowicz, Thaddus E.

In: University of Alberta Center for Systems Research CSR Working Paper. - č. 89-2, s. 1-29. - 1988

Ludwig von Bertalanffy, a distinguished biologist, occupies an important position in the intellectual history of the twentieth century. His contributions went beyond biology, and extended to psychology, psychiatry, sociology, cybe rnetics, history and philosophy. Some of his admirers even believe that von Bertalanffy's general systems theory could provide a conceptual framework for all these disciplines.

Text nad context: narrative, postmodernism and cybernetics / Bertrando, Paolo

In: Journal of Family Therapy. - Roč. 22, č. 1, s. 83-103. - 2002

Currently, the systemic view in family therapy is being substituted by a postmodern narrative approach, while cybernetics tends to be considered an outdated perspective and its contribution to therapy overlooked.

Mind the gap: the need for a generic bridge between psychoanalytic and systemic approaches / Donovan, Mary Ellen

In: Journal of Family Therapy. - Roč. 25, č. 2, s. 115-135. - 2003

The context for this paper is the ongoing systemic/psychoanalytic debate. It offers an alternative perspective to the recent contribution by Brodie and Wright (2002), in which they are concerned to underscore difference between the two therapeutic approaches. Here it is argued that the relationship is a great deal more complex than Brodie and Wright’s analysis might suggest. Attention is focused on significant areas of commonality, in particular the impact of social constructionist thinking across the two therapies as well as current developments in technique. A case is made for the consolidation of generic space where there is opportunity for cross-fertilization and for integrative and combined systemic/psychoanalytic approaches to be nurtured and developed where appropriate. Case vignettes are used to highlight different aspects of the generic component in child and family therapy and to underline the need for bridge-building between these key therapeutic approaches in the field.

Treading lightly: the solution-focused approach in practice / George, Evan

Counsellors coming across the solution-focused approach for the first time often comment on the simplicity of the model. Their comments can sometimes seem a little critical since, as we know, complexity is a quality that is valued in our society while ‘simple’ is often disparagingly equated with ‘simplistic’ and so rejected. However, before long, as their familiarity with the model grows, the same counsellors who were struck by the simplicity begin to comment, at times ruefully, ‘it may be simple but it’s not easy to do’. This apparent paradox – ‘simple but not easy’ – gets right to the heart of the solution-focused approach.
