Celý problém (nebo alespoň velká část) vyplývá z vrozené obyčejnosti vědců , která pramení ze stejného „instinktu“ jako obyčejnost magie. Dokonce i Fraser věděl že magie a věda je tak nějak to samé). Vrozená část této jednoduchosti je příbuzenství. Je to vztah mezi myslí a uvědoměním, vztah mezi částečnou izolací. My všichni (já, Darwin, Oackham a ostatní vědci) jsme stvoření, abychom formulovali myšlenky, které se zdají být řešením „vize jednoduchosti“, dáváme dohromady kousky toho, co víme a odvozujeme z nich naše záměry.

With fifty years having passed since Gregory Bateson and his colleagues published their famous paper, ‘Towards a Theory of Schizophrenia’ , it is an opportune time to review the theory and its clinical relevance today. Bateson’s team began with an interest in how the identity and functioning of self regulating systems was maintained through mechanisms of information, control and feedback. This work foreshadowed and gave momentum to the development of family therapy, with several members of the original research group later forming the initial schools of family therapy.

Vraťme se k původnímu vyjádření, pro něž Korzybski proslul – tvrzení, že mapa není území. Toto tvrzení je vyústěním velmi širokého proudu myšlení, které se vrací zpět do Řecka a vine se historií evropského myšlení posledních dvou tisíc let. V této historii trvá jakési násilné odtržení a často hluboký rozpor. Přinesl násilí nepřátel a prolévání krve. Počítám, že to všechno začalo s pythagorejci, jejichž spor s předchůdci dostal podobu: "Ptáte se, z čeho je to uděláno – země, oheň, voda atd?" Nebo se ptáte: "Jak je to uspořádáno?" Pythagoras směřoval spíše k hledání uspořádání než k hledání substance (podstaty). Tento spor trvá po celé věky a jeho pythagorejská polovina byla až donedávna polovinou ve všeobecnosti skrývanou. Gnostici byli následníky pythagorejců, alchymisté gnostiků atd. Spor dospěl k jakémusi vrcholu koncem 19. století, kdy byla postavena a posléze opuštěna pythagorejská vývojová teorie – teorie, která zahrnovala Mysl.

Gregory Bateson was one of the first scholars to appreciate that the patterns of organization and relational symmetry evident in all living systems are indicative of mind. We should not forget that due to the nineteenth century polemic between science and religion, any consideration of purpose and plan, e.g., mental process, had been a priori excluded from science as non-empirical, or immeasurable. Any reference to mind as an explanatory or causal principle had been banned from biology. Even in the social and behavioral sciences, references to mind remained suspect.

Gregory Bateson's interdisciplinary work in Anthropology, Psychiatry, Evolution, and Epistemology was profoundly influenced by the ideas set forth in systems theory, communication theory, information theory and cybernetics. As is now quite common, Bateson used the single term cybernetics in reference to an aggregate of these ideas that grew together shortly after World War II. For him, cybernetics, or communication theory, or information theory, or systems theory, together constituted a unified set of ideas, and he was among the first to appreciate the fact that the patterns of organization and relational symmetry evident in all living systems are indicative of mind.

Gregory Bateson, Systems Theory, and Autopoiesis / Hallbom, Kristine

Bateson and Maturana, both contemporary philosophers and systemic thinkers, spent a good part of their academic careers searching for the "Patterns of Life";. Both men have strong backgrounds in cybernetics and were colleagues of the great cybernetician Heinz Von Foerester, who originated the legendary Macy conferences in the 1950's in which cybernetics developer Norbert Wiener played a great part in.

Jak rozumět Batesonovi a Maturanovi

Originální název: Understanding Bateson and Maturana: Toward a Biological Foundation for the Social Sciences

Pokusy o pročištění pojmových základů rodinné terapie pomocí “epistemologie” přinesly vzrušení, nudu, podráždění a zmatek. Motivován přesvědčením, že aspoň zmatek je možné zmírnit, předkládá autor tuto stať jako studijního průvodce a tak trochu jako Rozetskou desku pro převod díla Gregory Batesona a Humberta Maturany. Článek ukazuje, že Maturanova práce je dobře slučitelná s prací Batesonovou. Kromě toho článek obsahuje konfrontaci hlavních kontrastních momentů ... Konečně se v článku tvrdí, že důraz na epistemologii odvedl pozornost zastánců i odpůrců od důležitého poselství Batesona a Maturany: sociálním systémům a veškerému lidskému snažení je nutno rozumět ve světle naší existence jakožto biologických entit, které jsou spojeny prostředím. Biologická ontologie implicitní v Batesonových spisech a explicitně načrtnutá v Maturanových může /konečně/ poskytnout spolehlivý základ sociálním a behaviorálním vědám..From Systemic to Clinical Epistemology

Tento článek referuje o výzkumném projektu, který navrhuje a zkoumá široký a systematický pohled na podstatu, etiologii a terapii schizofrenie. Výzkum vyústil v diskuzi nad různorodými daty a ideami, do které přispívali odborníci se zkušenostmi z oblasti antropologie, komunikační analýzy, psychoterapie, psychiatrie a psychoanalýzy. Stále nebylo dosaženo všeobecné shody ohledně obecných základů komunikační teorie o vzniku a podstatě schizofrenie. Tento příspěvek je předběžnou zprávou o našem pokračujícím výzkumu.

Tato kniha i myšlenky, které vedly k jejímu vzniku, se rozvíjely po dobu mnoha let a vdéčím za ně všemu, co jsem zmiňoval v pŕedmluvé ke své pŕedcházející knize, Steps to an Ecology of Mind. Protože jsem se zde pokusil psát tak, abych byl srozumitelný těm, kteŕí Steps nečetli, uvedu nyní pouze „dluhy" vzniklé od jejich vydání.

Různé: Obsahuje terminologický slovník.
