Gregory Bateson, Systems Theory, and Autopoiesis / Hallbom, Kristine

Bateson and Maturana, both contemporary philosophers and systemic thinkers, spent a good part of their academic careers searching for the "Patterns of Life";. Both men have strong backgrounds in cybernetics and were colleagues of the great cybernetician Heinz Von Foerester, who originated the legendary Macy conferences in the 1950's in which cybernetics developer Norbert Wiener played a great part in.

Gregory Bateson's Theory of Mind: Practical Applications to Pedagogy / Bale, Lawrence, S.

Gregory Bateson was one of the first scholars to appreciate that the patterns of organization and relational symmetry evident in all living systems are indicative of mind. We should not forget that due to the nineteenth century polemic between science and religion, any consideration of purpose and plan, e.g., mental process, had been a priori excluded from science as non-empirical, or immeasurable. Any reference to mind as an explanatory or causal principle had been banned from biology. Even in the social and behavioral sciences, references to mind remained suspect.

Gregory Bateson's interdisciplinary work in Anthropology, Psychiatry, Evolution, and Epistemology was profoundly influenced by the ideas set forth in systems theory, communication theory, information theory and cybernetics. As is now quite common, Bateson used the single term cybernetics in reference to an aggregate of these ideas that grew together shortly after World War II. For him, cybernetics, or communication theory, or information theory, or systems theory, together constituted a unified set of ideas, and he was among the first to appreciate the fact that the patterns of organization and relational symmetry evident in all living systems are indicative of mind.

Systemická terapie s jedincem

Koncept "cirkulárních otázek" je často zaměňován s konceptem cirkularity. Pojem "cirkulární otázky" byl upřednostňován v časech, kdy terapeut kladl v původním kontextu rodinné terapie každému členu rodiny popořádku otázky zaměřené na chování dvou či více jiných členů rodiny. Jinými slovy: Terapeut se pokoušel vyzvědět celostní pohled rodiny který tvořila síť spoluutvářejících se vztahů (jak mezi myšlenkami a emocemi, tak mezi způsoby chování). Nejefektivnější způsob, jak načrtnout mapu území sestával s kladení otázek, které zvýrazňovaly rozdíly. Tyto otázky zprostředkovávaly informace místo dat: Bateson byl přesvědčen, že informace je "rozdíl, který dělá rozdíl", to znamená, že se jedná o relaci, která se tímto způsobem odlišuje od dat.

Ekologické myšlení: fragmenty slabikáře

Možná, že právě na tomto rozporu se dají ilustrovat dva ze základních principů toho “jiného myšlení”, tak, jak jsme se ho pokoušeli hledat a formulovat v sedmi seminářích Ekosystémového přemýšlení: 1/ Skutečnost není plně a úspěšně předvídatelná, nikoliv proto, že je příliš složitá a my nikdy neznáme všechny proměnné, ale proto, že je svou podstatou “živá” - to znamená cirkulárně zpětnovazebně propojená, seberegulující - a každá její součást, včetně našich představ o ní, působí na její proměnlivost a nezachytitelnou tekutost. Tím nepostuluji jakousi mystickou nepoznatelnost skutečnosti, ale omylnost lineárního poznávání. Ač Bateson sám myslí značně “nelineárně”, jeho pokus o časovou prognózu nemohl být nic jiného, než prodloužení vývojové křivky, tak jak se jemu v jeho době jevila. 2/ Námitky technooptimistů jsou ještě lepším příkladem linearity a polarizovanosti současného nejrozšířenějšího způsobu myšlení: “Když to není tak, musí to být naopak!” Zatímco se jen ten člověk padající ve známé anekdotě z mrakodrapu, mohl přepočítat v patrech.
