Systemic thinking is central to the specialty of couple and family psychology (CFP). Eleven applications of systemic thinking (perceptual and cognitive structuring processes) are described to characterize the way couple and family psychologists think about research and practice. The application of systemic thinking to research is described in light of dynamic systems conceptualization and a systemic research approach that delineates six steps that identify collective variables, characterize attractor states, describe dynamic trajectories, identify points of transition, recognize control parameters, and manipulate control param- eters to identify core mechanisms of change is rehearsed and detailed.

Systemic family and couples therapy (SFCT) has evolved into a variety of forms to meet the needs of the people who come for therapy. Our clients differ not only by bringing the full range of psychological and relationship difficulties and the variety that our society has imaginatively created in family structures and relationships, but they also occupy the full life span and the great range of ethnic and other cultural variation that communities now contain. This review starts with an account of the basis of SFCT and explains why it offers a very different resource from all the other therapies, which strive to bring about change within individuals.

Toto je první obsáhlé zobrazení systemické terapie. Ludewig popisuje základy systemické teorie poznání a teorie systémů, jak byly vysloveny zvláště biologem Humbertem Maturanou a sociologem Niklasem Luhmannem. Obraz člověka, který lze z tohoto přístupu odvodit, je založen na přijetí mnohotvárnosti lidských světů a na respektu k lidské autonomii. Teoretická koncepce je doplněna popisem klinické praxe – třemi příkladně zvolenými kazuistickými ilustracemi z okruhu dětského neklidu, mentální anorexie dospívajících a psychotické krize.

Podnětem k zahájení spolupráce byl telefonát s matkou patnáctileté Emy. Ta mě informovala, že má lékařskou žádanku k „psychologickému vyšetření“. Obracela se na nás na doporučení a vzhledem k povaze pracoviště měla naději, že se z naší strany může její dceři dostat pomoc. Popisovala, že u dcery dochází ke každodennímu přejídání, „nemá nikdy dost“.

We situate Dr. Tomm’s ideas in relation to counselling, noting some of his important contributions to conceptualizing counsellors’ engagement with clients. We will also depict Tomm’s innovations as dialogic, suggesting that he looks upon his interactions with clients as co-creating accomplishments in the back and forth of therapeutic interaction. We highlight detailed discursive analyses of his actual interviews with clients, illustrating some conversational practices that further collaborative practice. The article concludes by summarizing Tomm’s ideas and conversational practices as they relate to fostering collaborative dialogue with clients.
