Faces of Constructivism / Dougiamas, Martin

In this section I'll describe the major "faces of constructivism" separately, because it is more helpful for me to write about them in that way, and hopefully for you to read about them, although perhaps both will be in a non-linear fashion.

Life, the Multiverse and Everything: An Introduction to the Ideas of Humberto Maturana / Kenny, Vincent

Based upon their experience working in a community mental-health clinic using solution-focused brief therapy, the authors describe a template for developing compliments. With most people, the family is a central part of their social system and therefore key to solution building. The authors have found the template particularly helpful in promoting solution building within the family system and therefore a very useful component in family therapy.Revised version of an Invited paper presented at the Istituto di Psicologia, Universita Cattolica del Sacro Cuore

Co-Constructing Cooperation with Mandated Clients / Berg, Insoo Kim -- De Jong, Peter

In: Social Work. - Roč. 46, č. 4, s. 361-374. - 2001

Dominant practice models for social work were originally developed and intended for work with voluntary clients. The professional literature indicates that use of these models with involuntary clients often alienates rather than engages. This article describes the use of solution-focused interviewing as a way to engage involuntary and mandated clients. A conversation with a court-ordered client is presented and analyzed to demonstrate how practitioners can begin the co-construction of cooperation with mandated clients through adopting a not-knowing posture, focusing on and amplifying what clients want and client strengths and successes, and asking relationship questions to generate possibilities for change specific to the mandated context. The ethical implications of this noncoercive, nonconfrontational approach are addressed, along with its implications for a view of how clients change.

Selektivní kritika knihy současná psychoterapie aneb kritika kvantitativního výzkumu na konkrétních příkladech / Barbarič, Juraj

In: PSYCHOSOM. - Roč. 9, č. 3-4, s. 197-216. - 2011

On Constructing a Reality / Foerster, Heinz von

In: This is an abbreviated version of a lecture given at the opening of the fourth International Conference on Environmental Design Research on April 15, 1973, at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia. -

I am sure you remember the plain citizen Jourdain in Moliere’s Bourgeois Gentilhomme who, nouveau riche, travels in the sophisticated circles of the French aristocracy, and who is eager to learn. On one occasion with his new friends they speak about poetry and prose, and Jourdain discovers to his amazement and great delight that whenever he speaks, he speaks prose. He is overwhelmed by this discovery: “I am speaking Prose! I have always spoken Prose! I have spoken Prose throughout my whole life!”

The Double Bind Theory: Still Crazy-Making After All These Years / Gibney, Paul

With fifty years having passed since Gregory Bateson and his colleagues published their famous paper, ‘Towards a Theory of Schizophrenia’ , it is an opportune time to review the theory and its clinical relevance today. Bateson’s team began with an interest in how the identity and functioning of self regulating systems was maintained through mechanisms of information, control and feedback. This work foreshadowed and gave momentum to the development of family therapy, with several members of the original research group later forming the initial schools of family therapy.

Mind the gap: the need for a generic bridge between psychoanalytic and systemic approaches / Donovan, Mary Ellen

In: Journal of Family Therapy. - Roč. 25, č. 2, s. 115-135. - 2003

The context for this paper is the ongoing systemic/psychoanalytic debate. It offers an alternative perspective to the recent contribution by Brodie and Wright (2002), in which they are concerned to underscore difference between the two therapeutic approaches. Here it is argued that the relationship is a great deal more complex than Brodie and Wright’s analysis might suggest. Attention is focused on significant areas of commonality, in particular the impact of social constructionist thinking across the two therapies as well as current developments in technique. A case is made for the consolidation of generic space where there is opportunity for cross-fertilization and for integrative and combined systemic/psychoanalytic approaches to be nurtured and developed where appropriate. Case vignettes are used to highlight different aspects of the generic component in child and family therapy and to underline the need for bridge-building between these key therapeutic approaches in the field.

I remember my first clinical supervisor, many years ago, repeating over and over again, "Stay with the feelings." Later, when I took training in family therapy, another supervisor kept saying, "Stay away tfom the feelings." Today, I tell trainees, "Dont ignore the feelings."
