The contribution of Humberto Maturana
to the sciences of complexity and psychology

This work attempts to present the most important contributions of Humberto R. Maturana to the field of psychology, in an effort to reveal them directly. The main conclusion is that Maturana has expanded the understanding of humanness and therapy through the biology of the observer.

Cybernetic Conversation

This paper is about a particular kind of relating between people engaged in processes of change, such as in therapy, primary medical care practice or participatory action research. My thesis is that if a therapist, practitioner or facilitator of research engages with individuals or groups on a basis of relational ...

Cybernetics of Cybernetics

Ladies and gentlemen—As you may remember, I opened my remarks at earlier conferences of our Society with theorems which, owing to the generosity of Stafford Beer, have been called “Heinz von Foerster’s Theorem Number One and Number Two”. This all is now history. However, building on a tradition of two ...

The Dance of Understanding

We subscribe to the view, expressed by Maturana and others, that satisfying experience of understanding does not result from invoking objectivity, the truth, or compelling argument, to achieve agreement by the force of reason, nor from a process of informative exchange, but from some other qualities, to be elusive and ...

Distinguishing Ernst von Glasersfeld’s “Radical Constructivism” from Humberto Maturana’s “Radical Realism”

Ernst von Glasersfeld has dedicated a lot of effort to trying to define just where his views and those of his friend Humberto Maturana part company, epistemologically speaking (Glasersfeld 1991, 2001).As a contribution to unravelling this puzzle I propose in this article to delineate just where they seem to differ ...

The Fuzziness of Communication A Catalyst for Seeking Consensus

Human beings differ in ways of understanding, interpreting, describing or sharing experience. On the basis of experience we construct our own conceptual systems (beliefs and values) that are neither consistent nor monolithic. "Alternative conceptual systems exist, whether one likes it or not. They are not likely to go away, since ...

Gregory Bateson, Systems Theory, and Autopoiesis

Bateson and Maturana, both contemporary philosophers and systemic thinkers, spent a good part of their academic careers searching for the "Patterns of Life";. Both men have strong backgrounds in cybernetics and were colleagues of the great cybernetician Heinz Von Foerester, who originated the legendary Macy conferences in the 1950's in ...
